Got Talent?

Photobucket

If someone asked you who you considered the most talented person in the world was, how would you respond? Brad Pitt? Lebron James? Yo Yo Ma? Alicia Keys? I think most of us would draw up somebody of status with a reputation to always deliver something beautiful, or entertaining, or all around magnificent. Out of your friends, who do you say is the most talented? Why? Are they singers? Painters? Lawyers? Athletes? In high schools all over America just about now teens are signing yearbooks, and I guarantee one page of every book is dedicated to the superlative, “Most Talented,” and I can 99% guarantee it’s either an athlete or artist.

But what if I can’t sing? Or don’t play guitar? Or can’t shoot a basketball to save my life? What if I am not that girl who everyone says of, “Oh you know Blair, she is that really talented _______.” Until recently, I’ve been waiting my whole life to figure out what my talent is. Lebron has always been good at sports & everyone knew it. Alicia could always sing. What have I always been able to do & why had I not discovered it. Deep down I just knew I had to have that “one true talent” and since I had no clue what it was, I picked one – the harmonica. For my 24th birthday, after all my big talk for years about being destined to be talented at the harmonica, I got one, and guess what – that’s not my one true talent. Dang it! Talentless?...

But who says talent is so necessarily quantitative? It is so easy (and dangerous) for us to think we have no gifting because we aren’t capable of doing xyz as good as so&so. So many of the great gifts God has given each of us are taken for granted. What if when you are racking your brain for the most talented person you know you remember your friend who is always hospitable, or your colleague who always listens, the humanitarian who exemplifies mercy, the lady behind the doctor's office counter who's level of patience soothes everyone?

Every person is uniquely created & given different gifts. Some of us have talents that aren't as apparent to the rest of the world, but they are no less special, impressive, or real. So next time you are around that group of movie stars & rock stars, don't shrink with inferiority, hold your head high--you, dear one, are talented too.

  2. I think my talent is gift giving. That comes along with my talent of knowing people's needs. It's something that has come naturally but with practice it's become a talent.

  4. what a beautiful post blair. i have definitely searched for that one stand-out talent as well and been jealous of those who have them, particularly artistic/musical talents. my hubby has some art student friends that i always let myself feel inferior around and i know it's so silly! you've really got me thinking on this now.

  7. i love this post, blair. such needed perspective.

and it seems to me that your talent is caring. loving. being passionate. not everyone can do that. not everyone can give back and mean it. and personally, i think that talent is better than singing anyway!

    you're awesome :)

  8. I think my talent is one of those--not easily apparent and not exactly a money maker. lol

  9. Fabulous post girl! Definately a thought provoker! But shit, now I can't think of a talent that I have. Yes, I'm very organized, I'm very neat, I'm almost obsessive about those things. But are they talents? Maybe but I wish I had better ones ;-)

  10. Jen - ask your closest friends, they'll know. We are too hard on ourselves to see our talents for what they are sometimes. Have a great weekend.

Thanks everyone for your comments -- so encouraging. I'm thankful for y'all!

  11. what a lovely post! i remember in school we used to have a 'gifted and talented' scheme and i used to hate it because they only chose people gifted or talented in maths, art, pe, drama or science. not english, which is where my talent lay! my english teacher did say to me: if we did gifted and talented in english, i would choose you. but it seemed like the school thought 'you can't be talented at reading! pft!'.

i hated the term 'gifted and talented'. everyone is gifted and everyone is talented, just some people in more apparent and obvious ways. i prefer subtler talents anyway.

  12. Just beautiful, Blair! So true, so true. I find my friends are so talented in different ways: thoughtfulness, perpetual cheeriness (this is a talent!), spontaneity, loyalty. You my friend, are extremely talented, too. Your blog is just one reasons, and I am sure your friends and loved ones know many more ways. =)

  13. Not gonna lie...I have a talent for making people cry. I had one week where I made a patient cry every single day. That takes skill, I tell you!

But really. Great post. And happy early birthday!!!

  14. too true. I find all the interviews I do with dancers to be completely inspiring - they all have outstanding talent but certainly it wasn't easy for them to get where they are now.

  22. Blair, you have talent up the wazoo! Take this blog for instance and running. It's interesting how we can lose perspective when comparing ourselves to others. When we look inside we may gain true perspective back. Looks like you have! Thanks for reminding me.

  23. This is a great post. You are very wise! We tend to look at famous people, with really great gifts in their respective fields, but sometimes we forget to see the less glamorous people for as talented and gifted as they are. And personally, I like being pretty good at a whole bunch of things better than if was just AMAZING at one thing. Great blog sweetie :)

  24. Beautiful post, Blair. I think we all have many talents -- even if they're not obvious ones. One person may sing well, while another is amazingly compassionate. I'm good at many things, and I'm still trying to figure out how I can bring those all together in what I do. Not easy but so worth it.
