wait... WHAT? um... i'm the mom of a 6 month old!!! holy-stinkin-awesome-cow!!

i'm more in love with her every day. i love being a mom more and more every day. I am constantly being knocked to my knees in amazement by how much my God loves me through this child. I could stare at her for hours on end. She makes my heart quite literally explode.

6 months! SIX months!! Can't believe how big she is! She is sleeping through the night again (so thankful) -- just last night she slept 11 hours. We are still breastfeeding full time and have added in a morning and evening meal... oatmeal and fruits in the morning & veggies at night. This kid loves eating!

In the last month she has had her first fever (scary - 102.7... i called the doc late one night at his house freaking out) and how been nursing a cold for a good while. Boogers are NOT her friend. However the plus side of her illness is that we got to get an official weigh in at the doctor last week -- 18lbs 4oz! Heavy Weight!

As of last week she is quite an accomplished army crawler both backwards and forwards. She also loves walking... yes, walking! -- of course she has to hold on to your hands, but she is so tickled with herself when she puts one foot in front of the other.

She is such a talker! She inadvertently says "da da" all the time... but i'm still convinced "Ma Ma" will be her first real word. In addition to her chit chat, she is a giggle monster. She finds Oscar (our pooch) especially hilarious.

Oh - i could go on and on... but i'll stop. I am just really loving 6 months. Every day I just want to engulf her with every part of me -- i can't cuddle her close enough. Just like the day she was born, my senses fail me. Man! -- if I can't handle her now, how much more will I fall to my knees in the light of God's glory!!! Wow. What a blessing!

Hopefully you are already well acquainted with her - because if not, sad to say... but you've been missing out! Q: Why do you blog?

A: I started blogging when my husband and I got married and moved from Seattle to Phoenix immediately upon returning from our honeymoon. We were excited to become the Arizona Russums and document all our adventures. However, blogging took an unexpected twist for me about six months later when I became so fascinated by this community that I began researching blogging for grad school. Most importantly though, I use my blog to share God's Word and encourage other women to live joyfully for Christ.

Q: Tell us something fun about you that your readers probably don't know?

A: I am super particular about my food. I don't like any condiments {ketchup - ugh, mustard - sick, mayo - eeek!} and I will not pour liquids over dry foods. This means no syrup on pancakes and no milk on cereal. The thought of eating soggy food makes me want to throw up! Weird, huh?

Q: If you had $5,000 and had to spend it on yourself in one day - how would you spend it?

A: On myself? Okay, if I had to spend it on myself I would probably hunt for new furniture and home décor goods around Phoenix. I would explore all the fun vintage and shabby chic shops I've heard about but still haven't visited since living here, and if there was any money left after this adventure, I would run over to Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel. Good thing I have amazing shopping stamina.

Q: Favorite beverage, favorite comfort food, favorite candy?

A: Umm... do I get to pick one of each?! Favorite bev is for sure the white chocolate mocha I make myself every morning on my little machine. It pairs perfectly with the Bible. // Favorite comfort food? Kraft Mac and Cheese on a sad or rainy day. // My favorite candy has been Sour Patch Watermelons since high school, but now I am obsessed with eating Twizzler Nibs in my night classes.

Q: One piece of advice for newlyweds?

A: Your spouse is not perfect and they never will be. You knew that going into it, but it's so easy to get caught up in ideals and expectations in those first weeks, months and years. I clung to I Peter 3:1-2 during my first year of marriage: "Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct." No matter how my husband is acting, I am called to obey God and respect my spouse. Usually this means silencing my tongue when I want to justify myself, point out Micah's mistakes, or spout off in anger.

Q: One piece of advice for new bloggers?

A: Have boundaries. If it stops being fun, take a break for a while. If responding to reader comments is taking over your life, don't respond to them unless a really special one jumps out at you. And while it's awesome to document life and share things online, its okay to keep some things private as well. You can be the "real" you on your blog and still have boundaries with what you post about your life at home.

Why I love Jesus and am religious

I am an excitable person. Sometimes that is a really cool and fun thing, and sometimes it gets me into a bit of trouble. The video I posted yesterday, "Why I hate religion, but love Jesus," excited me instantly. The videography, the rhymes, the passion -- it got me. I thought it was wonderful and wanted to share it. I heard some truths that I think resonate with a lot of people. Parts of it left me a bit "weirded out," but in my excitement, I found ways to work out those "kinks" in my own mind to fit into my own ideas about theology. So after watching it just once, I posted it on my blog. And that is where I confess a lack of wisdom on my part. Just because I can work out the "kinks," doesn't mean that it makes them less dangerous to observer/partake in and/or to share with others. I want to be careful and wise about sharing truth and protecting my mouth (and my blog) from spreading what I believe to be untruths. I hope that if you came to my blog (or any of my feeds) and watched that video that you will take a moment to read this follow up. I am hesitant to write this response, because it is very loaded and I am by no means a trained theologian. However, I opened up the conversation and I feel have a responsibility to address it to some extent. (Because there are others that say it better, I am going to include some quotes from other critiques I have read...)

I was not offended when he, Jeff Bethke, said he hated religion. I rationalized this by assuming he meant he hated false religion. I'm going to quote a lot from Kevin DeYoung because I feel he has a complete, well thought, critique of the video. I am going to pull the parts that most speak to the parts of the video that left me feeling unsettled (however, I hope you will also take the time to read it in its entirety).

"More important is Bethke’s opening line: “Jesus came to abolish religion.” That’s the whole point of the poem. The argument—and most poems are arguing for something—rests on the sharp distinction between religion on one side and Jesus on the other. Whether this argument is fair depends on your definition of religion. Bethke sees religion as a man made attempt to earn God’s favor. Religion equals self-righteousness, moral preening, and hypocrisy. Religion is all law and no gospel. If that’s religion, then Jesus is certainly against it.

But that’s not what religion is. We can say that’s what is has become for some people or what we understand it to be. But words still matter and we shouldn’t just define them however we want. “Jesus hates religion” communicates something that “Jesus hates self-righteousness” doesn’t. To say that Jesus hates pride and hypocrisy is old news. To say he hates religion—now, that has a kick to it. People hear “religion” and think of rules, rituals, dogma, pastors, priests, institutions. People love Oprah and the Shack and “spiritual, not religious” bumper stickers because the mood of our country is one that wants God without the strictures that come with traditional Christianity. We love the Jesus that hates religion...

Unless we define the word to suit our purposes, there is simply no biblical grounds for saying Jesus hated religion. What might be gained by using such language will, without a careful explanation and caveats, be outweighed by what is lost when we give the impression that religion is the alloy that corrupts a relationship with Jesus."

This is exactly what "weirds" me out about the video as I see in it hidden dangers that on the surface incur passion and praise, but in its depths causes corruption. It is no lie that many many people have been hurt and wounded by the church, historically and now -- physically and emotionally. I have seen it within my own family and on a daily basis in my own community. The pains are real - the wounds deep. I don't want to gloss over this truth. On the same note, I do not want to ignite "anger" and "resentment". I would hope, rather, that Bethke or any other who has gone through similar journeys would have hopes to reconcile the chasms that separate those who love Jesus from the church that Jesus loves.

Religion might preach grace, but another thing they practice
Tend to ridicule God’s people, they did it to John The Baptist
They can’t fix their problems, and so they just mask it
Not realizing religions like spraying perfume on a casket
See the problem with religion, is it never gets to the core
It’s just behavior modification, like a long list of chores
Like lets dress up the outside make look nice and neat
But it’s funny that’s what they use to do to mummies
While the corpse rots underneath

I’ve already said that I don’t think “religion” is the right term for what Bethke is talking about. But he has done a great job here of describing false religion. Jesus blasted the Pharisees for being “whitewashed tombs,” for looking beautiful on the outside and full of dead people’s bones on the inside, for appearing righteous but being full of hypocrisy and lawlessness (Matt. 23:27-28). It is possible for churches and churchgoers to have the reputation for being alive, but actually be dead (Rev. 3:1). Some churches claim to love grace, but all they give you is legalism. Bethke is hitting on a real problem.

Religion is not a bad thing. Religion without Jesus is. For a better idea of practical differences that separate the false religion I feel Bethke is referring to from Biblical (gospel) Christianity, please check out this table from Tim Keller's Gospel in Life curriculum.

Am I guilty of believing and living like the religion column? As a sinner, most definitely. Yet, I believe in the gospel and strive for and long for a life centered on Christ alone.

Now back to the point, one thing is vital to mention
How Jesus and religion are on opposite spectrums
See one’s the work of God, but one’s a man made invention
See one is the cure, but the other’s the infection
See because religion says do, Jesus says done
Religion says slave, Jesus says son
Religion puts you in bondage, while Jesus sets you free
Religion makes you blind, but Jesus makes you see
And that’s why religion and Jesus are two different clans

I won’t repeat my initial comments about religion and Jesus and whether they are really “on opposite spectrums.” I don’t think they are. That point notwithstanding, Bethke speaks the truth in this section. The differences between slavery and sonship, bondage and freedom, blindness and sight are all biblical themes.

I think the line about “religion says do, Jesus says done” can be misleading. Too many people hear that as “relationship not rules” when we’ve already seen that Jesus wants us to do everything he has commanded (Matt. 28:20). But if “do” means “do this to earn my favor” then the contrast is very appropriate.

We don't do good things to be saved. As believers we do good things out of the outflowing of God the Father working through us. We are not saved by works, but by grace through faith. Faith without works, however, is dead. Read James 2:14-26.

I really like DeYoung's conclusion. This being part of it:

"The strengths in this poem are the strengths I see in many young Christians—a passionate faith, a focus on Jesus, a love for grace, and a hatred for anything phony or self-righteous. The weaknesses here can be the weaknesses of my generation (and younger)—not enough talk of repentance and sanctification, a tendency to underestimate the importance of obedience in the Christian life, a one-dimensional view of grace, little awareness that our heavenly Father might ever discipline his children or be grieved by their continued transgression, and a penchant for sloganeering instead of careful nuance...

Thanks for reminding us about Jesus. But try to be more careful when talking about religion. After all, there is one religion whose aim is to worship, serve, know, proclaim, believe, obey, and organize around this Jesus. And without all those verbs, there’s not much Jesus left."

I believe in worship, service, prayer, proclaiming the gospel through word and deed, my aim is to act in humble obedience to my Savior, and I thirst regularly for fellowship with believers through common worship -- this makes me religious.

I struggle greatly with wrapping up this personal response. There is so much to be said and so many directions to go and I fear that in omitting any of it, I am only causing more confusion and spreading a dangerous fire. Yet, I stop at this. I pray that God will use these words for his glory or else erase them from your mind. Thank you for being a part of the conversation.

I am married to the most loveliest most charming dashing artist in all the lands! Ooooooooh how I love him! Everything about him... e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g! One of the things I love is his ability to capture and create beauty using canvas, paint, and brushes.

Look what I got for Christmas:

I love love these. The first is Magnolia when she was just a few weeks old. This painting was a total surprise to me on Christmas morning. David got up during the night to work on it. My eyes welled up with tears when I unwrapped it. I couldn't get it up on our walls fast enough! The second painting of me wasn't as much of a surprise because it is one that David did a while back. He does so many great paintings that I try not to ask to keep them (after all, it is his job to sell them), but I just loved this one so much that I just had to keep it. When I look at it I just feel beautiful. If that is how he sees me, I am one lucky girl!

David is sharing his process of a portrait in a ten part series free on youtube. The first part went live this week. This man is magic! I've always loved watching him work and am excited to share it with you:

I can't really comprehend how his mind works. This type of art is like math or latin to me -- I just don't get it! I am so thankful he does. I am so blessed by him.

Being an artist (or wife of an artist) is not always easy. There have been so many people who ask why an engineering major from Vanderbilt would choose to be an artist -- but we know that God has given David this talent for a reason and using the skills God has given us is an act of worship. It takes patience, dedication, discipline, and lots of faith daily submitting to the Lord. Oh, how our Lord blesses us and I look forward to the ways He will continue to out fold his goodness before us through the hands (brushes, paints, and canvas) of my sweet husband!

In the words of Jimmy Fallon - Happy Twenty Dozen! I've been trying to get this post up since last Wednesday... however life is happening all around me and just haven't been able to sit down. I had some grand ideas or some thought provoking reminiscing of the past year -- what i've learned & how i've changed... but I'll make a long story short with the use of one word: blessings!

Excited about what 2012 holds! David & I were just wide mouthed in amazement thinking about what twentydozen holds for baby M -- walking, talking...whoa crazy!

A huge thank you for all your love and support in 2011. Thank you to all my sponsors past & present. Thank you to all my guest posters who got me through my computer being stolen, maternity leave, and vacations.

2011 started after taking a "blog sabbatical," and coming back with this Very Honest Confession about my blogaholisim. I resoluted to slow down & be more genuine with my posting with specific focus on how I spent my time. I still have room for growth, but I feel I did fairly well.

Do I have a resolution this year? eh - not really, but I have some things I always need to do more of: pray more, drink more water, and keep my house clean.

Off to keep putting away Christmas decorations and unpack bags from all our travels (two of my least favorite things to do)! Also need to go play nurse to my sweet puppy dog, Oscar -- he's been crying all day and won't get out of bed (feel free to send him prayers!)

Miscellany Monday

I realize it is not Monday -- that it is Tuesday... but today is technically my Monday since I took the real Monday off - so...

{ONE} One week ago M turned 5 Months old!!!

{TWO} Loving these new additions to the Christmas tree this year representing our newest addition:

First two ornaments were made using this tutorial -- they are basically salt cookies! All the grand & great grand parents got one. So easy to make -- even M loved making them.

Second ornament was inspired by pinterest and made by my sweet high school friend Cori. She recently started a shop, RaeLynn's Handmade Design, that sells such loveliness from custom designs like this to childrens' clothes to accessories. Right now she is only on facebook but will be opening an etsy shop soon. Check her shop out HERE.

{FOUR} Straight straight straight:

Have you heard of Hana hair Straighteners? Cause they're the bombdotcom. Was super excited to have the opportunity to review one courtesy of Misikko. Yes, I already have straight hair, but I love the way a good straightner like the hana not only calms the fly aways, but basically turns your hair to silk and like Olivia from For Me puts it -- gives you "diva straight" hair. Most of y'all have heard of the chi hair straighter, the hana is very similar -- infact, i think better! Something else awesome about ordering a hana flat iron from Misikko is that it comes in a way awesome gift box that includes lip gloss, hair brush, two different cases for the hana, wet hair towel wrap, and some other way cool samples & such - with all that swag I felt like a VIP. {p.s. please ignore the fact that I need to have my bangs trimmed in these photos}

Taking a break from bloggin for the next couple days to celebrate the birth of my sweet Savior and enjoy time with family. We're headed over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house! I wrote the below post for our church blog & thought I'd share it here as well. Hope everyone has their shopping done and is able to revel in this season of advent. xo

When I was in 6th grade giving gifts to all your friends was a big deal. You couldn’t just give candy canes, the gifts had to be perfectly picked and perfectly wrapped. Any earned money I had from extra work around the house or saved from birthdays was spent that year. I bought cd’s, mittens, Hanson posters (anyone remember Hanson? They were my generation’s Jonas Brothers/Justin Bieber), and more making sure my friends got the perfect gift. Yet, it wasn’t about their happiness or how much they might like their gift. As a 6th grader it was about looking cool, being a good gift giver, and hopefully receiving the same quality gift in return. As school came to an end for the semester I remember feeling pretty good about the gifts I gave and what I had received in return. I’ll never forget when it came time to buy a gift for my dad that year. I had no money left! I begged and begged my mom to lend me money so I could pick out a nice gift for my dad. I had a little over $3 left. She wouldn’t lend me the money but drove me to the drug store where I picked out a combination lock for my dad’s gym locker. I was embarrassed and ashamed and I remember thinking how that lock would not be nearly enough to show my Dad how much I loved him. I remember sneaking a note under his pillow to tell him I was sorry and then trying to hide when he unwrapped my gift. I knew he knew how much more thought, time, and money I put into my school friends’ gifts. I honestly felt the weight of what I thought was a ruined Christmas.

When my dad opened my gift that year he didn’t scoff or furrow his brow. He smiled and let me know how much he was in need of such a lock. In his reception of the gift I felt his love for me, his understanding, and his forgiveness. The weight I had felt was lifted. I learned big lessons that year in giving and receiving, but perhaps the most important thing I learned was the depth of my father’s love for me.

How much more does our heavenly father love us! He receives our gifts and all our attempts to love and honor him well and removes the weight of our inadequacies. What a Savior! Emmanuel!

5 months! -- that's just about how long i've been a parent.. since WE've been parents. David and I are Daddy & Mommy -- wait,... WHAT?! Yes. That still kinda freaks me out. I'm a parent. I have a sweet SWEET baby girl and I am married to her wonderful daddy. Crazy of all Crazies & blessings of all blessings! This is for REAL and I LOVE it!

So much has happened over the last five months. I am in love with being a mommy and ever more in love with my husband -- and because of each of these loves, ever more in love with my Savior. He truly is blessing us richly!

My job at Covenant as the Assistant Middle School Youth Director is both amazingly fun and rewarding. It weirds me out how perfect it is for both me and our family -- (why are we so weirded out - as if God didn't plan ALL things for our Good always!). Shout out to any of my sweet middle school girls who might be reading this - Love y'all!!

Magnolia is a healthy TALKATIVE sweet baby love bunny. We like to brag about her. The nursery ladies at church all love her and dote on her. At her 4month doctor's appointment the doc said she had the motor skills of a 6 month old. She is still 90%+ in weight. Her hair is growing. She is sitting up mostly unassisted. She is eating rice cereal (and starting tonight, green beans!) She has discovered our french bulldog, Oscar, and finds him hilarious. I can carry her on my hip -- (which freaks me out... again, wait WHAT? I'm a mom with a big kid?!?) We are so excited to share in her first Christmas. She loves the lights. She gifts us with such a new kind of Christmas joy that neither David or I have experienced before.

This Sunday, the 18th, she is getting baptized! I am beyond excited. She will wear my gown. At my church the congregation starts their ministry to the child by singing a song - we've picked Come Thou Fount, which is the same song I walked down the aisle to at my wedding. All M's grandparents and most of her aunts & uncles will be there + sweet friends. Man -- am I going to be a mess! Someone please remind me to use waterproof mascara (for real, can someone please text or tweet me Sunday morning?)

The picture above is from this past weekend. David surprised me with tickets to the Nashville Nutcracker. Since my sister did ballet growing up and was always in the Knoxville Nutcracker, it was just a beautifully nostalgic afternoon. It was also our first real date as parents! Our sweet friend (perhaps M's future mother-in-law?) came over and watched Magnolia while we set out for the theater! It's been a while since I've worn a dress & heals. The ballet was beautiful. Both David and I couldn't help but imagine Magnolia up on stage as one of the tiny little mice!

Y'all everybody get your diaries out and write this down - Blair McLeod cooked a recipe from Pioneer Woman. She read the directions and made it step by step. I know -- you are shocked. If your jaw dropped go ahead and close your mouth... don't want you to catch flies. But you heard/read me right, I did in fact make Pioneer Woman's vegetable lasagna. And let me tell you what -- it actually was pretty easy. My problem is that I'm lazy & don't like to read directions. However when there are lots of pictures like PW does, I'm a bit more apt to comply. Anywhooo-- it turned out pretty well. Good thing because I made a ton & we'll be eating it all week! (my pic makes it look kinda blah - hers make it look yum!... which it is!)

After dinner I attempted a dessert I had heard rumours about -- instead of oil/water/eggs, you add a can of diet coke to a box of brownie mix! Less calories and is supposed to make a light fluffy cake-like brownie. You just whisk it together and than cook regularly according to directions on the back of the box. I gave it a whirl...

They weren't bad! But they certainly weren't pretty (pretty ugly actually)! They have a very light feel and you can actually distinguish the coke flavor, which I liked. They were a bit spongey -- would have been good with a raspberry compote or something on top to add flavor and texture.

Warning: if you are in the mood for brownies - don't make these. They don't compare to the ooey gooey brownies. If you are making these to indulge - add ice cream or berries or something. These don't stand alone.

Dinner & dessert in one night...Raise your hand if you are impressed! (okay fine, i'll just raise my own hand...)

tree is up... egg nog carton #1 is in the fridge (gonna try to limit this christmas season to 3 cartons)... Christmas time is here! And added bonus this year I have sweet SWEET baby M instead of some lingering morning sickness and anxiety over sharing our pregnancy news.

Man, I love me some NOG! (I've blogged about it Here & Here). I was slipping it into my coffee long before starbucks and I hold fast to the truth that it IS a NEGATIVE calorie food! I don't like it with any additives -- just pure thick yummy heavenly straight from the carton into my tummy tum tum!

...(i seriously just got up, went to the fridge, slurped some egg nog goodness... but i'm back now)...

Okay, as I wipe my nog-stache I've got some holiday cheer to spread -- some FREE music! Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors are giving away their popular Neighborly Chistmas album -- yes, the whole thing! Thought I'd share a few things that I really dig. Let me know if you dig them too -- maybe we are kindred spirits (speaking of which, i really dig Anne of Green Gables... but I digress). In no particular order, I enjoy:

Coffee. I enjoy coffee... a lot! Before i was pregnant i would go in spurts and then during pregnancy i for the most part stayed away from it -- now?... 2 cups every morning. I think I could have decaf and like it just the same (i don't think i'm a caffeine addict) -- to me coffee is about the ritual of making it and then holding the warm mug in both hands right under your nose and then sipping it for so long your last sip is cold. Add in some flavored creamers and you'll really make me happy. Currently we have amaretto as well as peppermint mocha creamers in the fridge. I sometime will mix it up and mix in honey, cinnamon, and heavy whipping cream into my jo. What do I enjoy at starbucks? Great question!! I'm currently kinda obsessed with carmel americanos. They are the bomb! And... surprisingly cheap (well, cheap as far as starbucks is concerned). Sometimes, when I get in bed at night, i'm already excited about having coffee in the morning. mmmm coffee! If you are sipping some coffee as you read this, leave me some love! What's your coffee poison?

Parenthood. I enjoy Parenthood... and while I do of couse love being a mommy, I'm talking this time about the tv show. Have you seen it? It is the one show that D and I make a point to watch every week. And it is safe to say that at least one of us probably cries every other episode or so. I love how real this show is. Its about a real family without being over inflated with politics & trying to be pc. Not to be cheesy -- but it for real inspires & challenges me as a parent. Plus added bonus... the music! I have been introduced to so many great artists through the songs played on this show. To the peeps in charge of this show -- well done & keep up the good work!!

Pinning. I enjoy pinning... 'nough said am I right? Ok -- I'll say one more thing - my favorite board is my DIY/Recipe "to do one day" board. and i WILL do it ALL one day... (are their crafts in heaven, cause that might end up being the day I actually get to these). I also may or may not have pinned a Christmas list to santa...

Post Turkey Miscellanies

{1} I kind of failed at using the real camera (as in, not the ever-present-iphone) over M's first thanksgiving. So here we are with photos a-la instagram & befunky. We had a wonderful time in bham with the mcleod clan. Fried turkey is yum yum & Auburn's loss was no fun fun. I did go out on blackfriday sorta kinda & made it out no worse for the wear & crossed 2 Christmas presents off the list.

{2} I (re)started guitar lessons yesterday. I had not played in forrrrrrrr-evvvvvvvv-eeerrrr & figured it was as good as time as any to jump back in the proverbial saddle. Lesson 1 - remembering cords, remembering how much it makes my fingers hurt, and tackling the hymn "the churches one foundation." My goal for next week is to master Dave Matthew's Satelite... psych!!! My goal by next week is to master the transition from an Eminor cord to D/F#. (I feel like i'm kinda cool when I say those cords -- but trust me, I actually have NO idea what I'm talking about). I should also mention that my mistro is no other than Doug -- the ever cute (and single) model from Man week! Which speaking of...

Why Wild & Precious

I first heard the Mary Oliver poem, The Summer Day, in high school. The last line "What is it you plan to do with your one wild & precious life?" was a regular challenge to my classmates and me from my senior english teacher. It was a question that stirred my soul.

In the years since high school, this poetic line has gained meaning as it has been shaped by my understanding of the gospel. If you have read C.S. Lewis' The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe (or seen the movie), you'll remember the line "He's not a tame lion." This line refers to Aslan, the character Lewis uses to represent Jesus in the fantasy world of Narnia.

The way God pursues us is the most precious gift I could receive, and the choice to follow him is a wild one. The more I mature in my faith the more I realize how big He is and how not in control I am. Following Jesus does not promise that life will always be easy. Hard times do and will come. Just with an untamed lion, you can't always predict what is next. But when I think back to the valleys of my life I can see how tenderly God held me and pulled me through. Some of the most precious times of my faith journey come from when God walked beside me through those times - displaying his great love for me. And not only does He pursue and guide us through the valleys, but he delights to guide us to the mountain tops where we can experience His glory. He cries with us and He laughs with us - an ever present God.

God's love for us is anything but tame. His desire for our hearts is ferocious and wild, but oh! is it precious -- so very very precious.

Too much fun! But I have to say... now as a mother -- Halloween is so weird! I mean when else is it acceptable to walk up to a stranger's door and ask them to give you a trick or a treat? Creeps me out just a bit. Also creeps me out to have people come up to my door and peer into my house. Maybe it is just because of my neighborhood? (It's what you could call, "up & coming" to put it nicely.) Haha. I mean I loved it as a kid and i'm sure i'll chill out by the time M is really ready to enjoy the festivities -- we'll see. This year we had so much fun with our friends/neighbors/coworkers & their super cute little Elmo! Pizza + candy + cute kids + sweet friends = the best!

Trick or treat y'all! My friends over at costumediscounters.com sent M this sweet pink lamb costume for her first Halloween. They have so many fun adult, children, and newborn costumes to pick from. Pretty cute right? Unfortunately -- M is not to keen on wearing it. It is a size 0-6 months, and at 3 months the body is a bit to big and the head does not buckle under her chubby cheeks and extra chinny chin chin. However, I had a super pleasnt & easy time ordering from them. They've got costumes at great values & it definitely beats fighting the crowds and sorting through the piles at wal-mart or a drug store!

perfect loveliness

Carmel by the Sea = perfect loveliness. Having this little vacation within a vacation was way awesome. This was our first vacation as a family of three & it could not have been more perfect. This little town on the ocean is so perfect, quiet, and restful. The weather was awesome, the air was clean and crisp... I could have stayed for days and days and forgotten all concept of time and worries. I WILL be going back!

There are lots of fun shops and adorable houses around this area. Nature is unreal. There is an awesome 17mile scenic drive not to mention the beach! We loved taking Magnolia for her first beach visit!

It's a bumpy road...

This weekend I struggled through a very hard run. I've been back to "running" for about two weeks now & have been so frustrated with how out of shape I feel. Yes... I know... I just had a baby!!! And I feel like I'm giving myself a fair break, but I just didn't expect it to be so hard and feel so awful. Running postpartum, for me, is 10x worse than trying to run after just taking a 5 month hiatus out of laziness/busyness. It is a whole different ball game. First of all, my abs feel like strange (and somewhat painful) aliens when I run -- I've never felt that before. My cardio is of course lacking. And gosh darn it, pushing a jogging stroller is a full body workout all in itself!

I know I need to be patient with myself and that it is a long road. I feel pretty comfortable in this new and ever-changing skin of mine. I've lost a good amount of the weight, but still have a couple of handful of lbs to go to get back into most of my pants. I'd be okay with being this new size, if it wouldn't be so expensive to replace my whole wardrobe. I mean, you don't want me to have to go naked right?

After my ugly run, I spent sometime looking at Magnolia's blog (she has her own private blog that is kind of like a "baby book" that is just for fam and close friends to read). I cannot even believe how big she is!! I mean, I know it was only 3 (almost) months ago, but I look back at early pictures and it feels like so long ago. Also on this blog is a page dedicated completely to "the bump."

To remind you...

Looking back at these pictures I was humbled. Sitting there sweaty and brooding over the extra lbs. and yearning to be "back to normal," in shape, and closer to what the world says is perfect, I was struck by the magnitude of how beautiful I felt when I was pregnant. 35+lbs. heavier with swollen ankles, my beauty had nothing to do with body shape or lung capacity -- but radiated from within.

I look at the round belly in those pictures above, and the woman carrying it and am filled with profound joy. My body is beautiful. It was wonderfully made.

Monkey See Monkey Do

I've been Pin-Crazy lately! Especially with my "To Do (one day...)" board. SO many ideas out there that I have the desire to tackle, but for the most part lack the time and/or initiative to do. However, this one was uber easy!

2 Ingredient Pumpkin Bread/Cake!... Yes, that is right just TWO! Monkey see, monkey do! -- it is that easy. Mix together one can of Pumpkin Puree (not pie filling, puree!) and a box of yellow cake mix.

When you click on the pinterest picture it will take you to some directions that say to cook for about 25 minutes. I made two separate ones this past weekend and both took at least 40 minutes (cooked in metal standard bread pan).

I also choose to add some nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon into the mix to give it more of a pie flavor. Instead of making the suggested apple cider glaze, I made a walnut/oatmeal crumble. For the crumble just mix together handful each of brown sugar, crushed walnut, and oatmeal, and half a stick of butter. I mashed it all together with my hands before crumbling on top of the pumpkin/cake mix.

This is a super moist cake. If you are using the "toothpick method" to check if it is done, just know that it will always come out wet -- it just shouldn't come out with tiny chunks on it.

I'm excited to try other variations on this cake. Someone left me a comment on pinterest that it is also good with a spice cake mix instead of yellow. I like to call this bread... so i don't feel bad that we've been eating it for breakfast. But this weekend, I called it cake when I put a candle in it and ate it with vanilla bean ice cream for Pappy's bday. It's a very versatile baked good!

A Daddy & his Girl

this just about stops my heart! it's like the scene in The Grinch when his heart grows exponentially when he sees all the whoos in whooville singing. Watching David with M just about makes my heart jump out of my chest. So in love with him. So in love with my little girl. So in love with motherhood.

Magnolia had a dr's appointment Monday. Me & her both cried our eyes out when she got her shots. She is doing wonderfully -- 95th percentile in weight! (13lbs 13oz at 11weeks old!). She's got great neck control. Smiles all the time. She got the giggle for about 5 minutes straight about 2 weeks ago... but as hard as we try, we can't get her to do it again.

Right now she is still sleeping in the bassinet in our bedroom, but doc said because she is so big that she would probably benefit from and enjoy a thicker mattress. The plan is to move her to her crib/room when we get back from California at the end of the month... but this mom is gonna miss having her so close at night!

Daddy bathes her every night around 10:30pm and she LOVES it!! So fun to watch her splish and splash. Right after bath she eats and then... wait for it... sleeps for 7 - 8.25 hours! She's been sleeping like this for the past few weeks!!

Basically, I'm pretty spoiled! I've already totally forgotten all my pregnancy woes -- somebody remind me quick before Magnolia ends up with a little brother or sister before she is 1! :)

Breastfeeding is Fashionable

Who knew?! Honestly I had no idea when I decided to include my breastfeeding pictures in Thursday's post that such debate would ensue... but since it did, I thought I would attempt to clear the air a little bit and address a few of the comments.

Breastfeeding is fashionable. I think this is a simple enough campaign. Think about fashion -- it's subjective, right? Fashion is in the eye of the beholder. Thus, everyone is entitled to an opinion of their own. For example, take leggings... we would probably all agree that leggings are a current fashion trend. However, we don't all wear leggings the same way. Some of us only wear leggings under dresses that come down to mid thy, some of us wear them with tunic tops that come just below our bottoms, and some of us don't have problem wearing them without a tunic or dress covering our but. When stores sell you a pair of leggings, they don't dictate how they are to be worn, but leave it for you to decide.

Now back to breastfeeding... like fashion, again let's use leggings for the sake of argument, it is up to a woman to choose their comfort level of how they will "wear" it in public. Here is how I choose to breastfeed in public based on my own personal comfort:

When I'm in public, be it the mall, a restaurant, the park, wherever, let me make it clear -- I do NOT want ANYONE to see my breast. I don't want to be stared at. I plan in advance before going out..."If I end up needing to feed her, where can I the most easily make that happen." Granted & a big "duh," infants like to change your plan, but it is nice and helpful to attempt to plan things out. When I breastfeed in public, if I am in close proximity to people, I use a cover. I try not to be in close proximity and this is because I am uncomfortable with it. Some women are fine with it and can get things done in a crowded room & more power to them! I will usually look for an out-of-the-way place to go if it works out and I'm able to leave the situation I'm in. I will not feed my baby in a bathroom. That is gross. And, like my personal fashion, my goal is modesty.

An example of a recent public breastfeeding:

I'm at WholeFoods eating lunch with friends from church. There is a seating area next to the stairs and there is a lot of people traffic. Magnolia is starting to get fussy and I know it is time to feed her. The table is pretty tight, and 3 guy friends are within arms' length. These are all guys I have BF in front of before (in a house with more room and with a cover), but since proximity was so tight, I felt more comfortable moving into the hallway, and I think they probably did too. I went a couple feet over to a hallway, got my cover out, and while standing, got the job done. As I fed M I had a nice conversation with a mom and her little girl as they were waiting for someone in the bathroom.

With that being said, if I can't get away, I can't get away & I WILL feed my child where I have to & when I have to. The last thing I want to do in these scenarios is cause a scene.

Natural?

There was a lot of discussion surrounding breastfeeding being natural and what that might warrant. I stand by it -- I think it is natural. Do I mean this to say that I think it is natural to run around with your top off? No. I do however mean this to say that it is an ability that God has given (most) women, and as stewards of this gifting, I find it appropriate for it not to be hidden in a closet.

Am I my brother's keeper?

Yes. I do have concern for the men in my life (strangers included). All the men closest to me hold a similar view to breastfeeding as I do. They are glad that I am able to breastfeed and support my need to to it when I need to do it. I of course have different comfort levels with different guy friends -- sometimes I use a cover in the same room, sometimes I give myself more distance. If I am ever unsure of a friend's comfort level, I have either asked them or their wife if they mind. For my husband, being around a woman who is breastfeeding, is at worst, awkward. Are their men who feel differently? I'm sure there probably are. And that is why I do my utmost to be modest. However -- I cannot save the world. I can and will do my part, but men who have deeper problems with women breastfeeding need to do their part as well, I shouldn't have to all out stop taking care of my child.

Why the pictures? Why the campaign?

I think breastfeeding is beautiful. I want to encourage women, who are able, to breastfeed. The fear of public scrutiny and embarrassment is becoming too big of an influence in a women's decision to breastfeed. I wanted to give what I consider to be a positive and modest view of breastfeeding... including public feeding. It takes courage to breastfeed. Not just in public, but period. It hurts (at least at first), it's tiring, and can be messy and awkward. But the benefits for the child and mother are great. I encourage new mothers to stick with it, put your child's needs above the pain/messy/awkwardness that breastfeeding can entail, and delight in the connection you have with your baby.

I'm not a fashionista -- but as a new mom, I have a new opinion to share of what should be on the hot fashion list... my new campaign: Breastfeeding is Fashionable.

It seems like public breast feeding has been all in the news lately -- whether it is appropriate or "gross." I rarely stick my spoon in the pot of controversy on this blog, but this time I am giving my two (short) cents. Here it goes:

Breastfeeding is natural. Breastfeeding is healthy. Breastfeeding is not a dirty word. When you deny a woman the right to feed her child, you are standing in the way of her delivering health to her child. Women don't feed their babies in public for attention. When your baby needs something, you do what you have to do -- they are the priority, not whether or not some stranger is comfortable with the situation. Yes, I do my best to be as discreet as possible. Yes, I have a nursing cover and use it when in close proximity to people. Yes, I prefer to feed my baby in private. But here is the raw of it -- I am not ashamed of my body and the beautiful way that God designed it to work. Do I consider myself a modest person? Yes. Do I believe you can be modest and breastfeed in public? Absolutely.

With that said...

These picture were not taken for the purpose of my new "Breastfeeding is Fashionable" campaign... but M was hungry & it is what ended up happening. empty dry cake mix on top

spread walnuts of desired amount on top

sprinkle handful of brown sugar on top of all that

A New Answer

For the past several weeks I've looked at my sweet daughter and had a perplexing feeling of sadness. I wasn't sad for me, but was sad for her. I couldn't quite figure it out. She has never seemed unhappy or in need, but something was just unsettling to me and seemed out of place. For a while I didn't give it much consideration -- it was a passing thought of puzzlement from time to time as I fed her or played with her. Finally, just this past week, and quite out of the blue it hit me. I was projecting loneliness on her. Without naming the emotion, what I had been feeling was an anxiety over the fact that Magnolia was without a twin and without a best friend.

To you perhaps this is quizzical. More babies than not are born alone. I have never been alone. I don't know what it feels like. I have always and will for ever have a best friend in my twin sister. Sure we joke about it -- that we are "womb mates," but the fact of the matter is I was specially blessed in my birth.

People have always asked the question, "Do you like being a twin?" My usual answer has come with a tone of amusement tinged with annoyance, "How am I supposed to know? I've never had anything else to compare it to" (rude, I know).

Perhaps now, as a mother of one, I do have a comparison. In all honesty, though, they are incomparable. I know that Magnolia isn't lonely & that she is happy and she is loved. But still, she will never know what I know. So as I reflect on my feelings of the last several weeks I feel my answer to the old question will now be a bit more complex and come from a deeper place of my heart.

Do I like being a twin?

Yes. It was the very first joy of my life.

New hair New earrings

I'm on a two year cycle for bangs... every two years in the fall i chop me some bangs. Well, bang time has rolled around again! Although I love bangs, it always takes a few days of adjustment until I'm "happy" with them. Are y'all like that with haircuts?

And what goes great with new hair cuts? new earrings! I was so excited when Anjolee Jewelry contacted me to do review some diamond earrings (yes, i said diamonds!). Hello, um, Yes! I've been secretly planning (and yes, maybe dropping a few hints) that one day -- perhaps a 10 or 15 year anniversary -- I would want some diamond stud earrings to match my engagement ring. Well, Anjolee stepped in while I'm waiting and asked me to pick out something from their online shop. They make things pretty easy -- you pick the diamond studs carrot, weight, clarity, shape, and metal setting. I was able to create earrings to match my ring with just a couple clicks. So fun... and so bling bling pretty! Getting beautiful earrings in the mail is super exciting, especially when they come in a fancy wooden anjolee box. love. love. LOVE.

Magnolia, my darling child. I love you so much. I love your eyelashes. I love your little nose and ears. I love how your fingers search for things to grab and end up in my hair or the collar of my shirt. I love how you are determined to sit up straight and hold your head up on your own (you've gotten quite good at it!). You make me cry and laugh all the time, sometimes both at once. You are such a blessing in my life--a living, growing, maturing testament to the grace and provision of our King and Savior.

So glad you joined us two months ago.

Quick Life Update

Life is good. I feel so incredibly and overwhelmingly blessed. I have a healthy little baby girl. She smiles at me. She eats well. Her tiny little arms search for me and gently tickle my skin when I hold her. She is perfect, and chubby, and so beautiful. She will be 2 months old in just five days!

I am healthy (I have carpal tunnel & tendonitis, but hey, I can deal with that). My body is starting to feel a bit closer to "normal," although I still have a good handful of lbs. to loose. I'm excited about the cooler weather and really starting to run/exercise. (I did one run at 3 weeks postpartum but have stuck to walking since then). This morning I am going on my first jog with little nugget with my BOB stroller.

I started my new job last week -- assistant middle school youth director. It feels nothing like a job. The youth group kids are amazingly fun. I'm enjoying going to their games/matches/meets. This past Sunday night we ran around the church playing lazer tag. My boss is A+mazing & 3 of our best friends are also on the youth staff.

My sweet husband continues to just get sweeter. He is such a good daddy. We've been playing lots of 2 person Catan. We love having coffee together in the morning. He has been busy with lots of fun commissions with his art and taking part in some really cool exhibitions and competitions. Part of the reason we are going to California in October is because he is part of a juried art show with the National Impressionist Society. To brag, my husband is pretty much the bomb.

So many dreams & prayers feel like they are coming true. I am so happy. Don't let me full you -- I am human and have days that are less than peachy, but I look at my life and just see blessings upon blessings.

I Remember 9.11.01 {Link Up}

10 years ago I was a senior in high school. i had just walked into the senior wing and was on my way to my locker. everyone was really quiet and several people were going into Dr. Roop's room, but it wasn't time for class yet and I knew the people going in weren't in advanced physics (neither was I!)... not wanting to miss anything, I followed the crowd and looked up to see smoke billowing out of the first tower. It did not sink in at all. Someone said it was a terrorist. Someone else said that someone had "just started a war." The first thing out of my mouth (i'm embarrassed to admit this) was "you're going to get drafted," to my friend Brad.

After that things get blurry. I remember there were intercom announcements. I know there was really no work done that day. Every room that had a tv... it was on. Tears came in waves as reality set in for different people. My full reaction came a shortly after the 2nd tower was hit. My mom worked at my school and as the weight of what had just happened set in I stood up and walked out of class. I don't think I even said anything to my teacher, and in light of things - she didn't care. I started walking towards my mom's room. Somehow she knew at that exact moment that I needed her and we ended up meeting in the hallway halfway between our rooms. Mom put out her arms and said, "I know," and I just melted in tears. My heart was breaking in a way that almost felt like panic -- how were the families going to make it through this nightmare? How would I fit into their recovery - could I? I wanted to help, but felt completely helpless.

I remember hearing all the rumors of students who had parents in NYC for business. They all got excused for the day. We had a home soccer game scheduled that afternoon. Our coaches teetered on canceling it, but in the end we decided we wouldn't let the attacks stop us from living life, not even for a moment. Before the game started we met in the middle of the field with the other team and I lead us all in prayer.

We had a home football game that Friday. We all traded in our school colors for red, white, and blue and our Maryville Rebels flags for American flags. I was overwhelmed with a sense of community and patriotism.

I can't remember when the national memorial service was held. But I remember watching it during year book. I remember sobbing. Right there, in the middle of everyone, I just had to cry. The images that continue to haunt me are the ones of the ash covered people -- distraught and terrified, seemingly lost in the streets of New York. Sometimes remembering that day can still bring tears to my eyes.

David and I visited ground zero this past March when we were in NYC for our babymoon. So crazy that 10 years have passed -- how many things have changed.

I don't have anything incredibly insightful or inspiring to share, I just wanted to take today to remember.

In my last few months of pregnancy my sweet momma sent David a secret big box full of wrapped treasures. Whenever David deemed it necessary (if i was having a hard day or was particularly hormonal) he would surprise me with a gift from mom. Most of them were treasures from my childhood! Something really cute she did was send me an outfit of mine when I was little wrapped with a picture of me wearing it. Pure gold in my eyes and something I'll hopefully remember to do for Magnolia.

The second set of pictures are particularly precious to me. If you can't tell - mom is both the left middle and right top & I am left top and right bottom. The gorgeous golden haired lady on the right is my Grammie. Something really cool?... we are all named K/Catherine. My Grammie is Katherine with a K, my mom with a C, my first name is Katherine, and of course... you guessed it, Magnolia's first name is Catherine with a C. A beautiful tradition for the oldest girls of the family.

Something else super cool?... the four K/Catherine's will be together for the first time in late October! D, M, me and mom are flying out to California. My Grammie is so super special to me and although she has progressed Alzheimer's, she continues to be one of the most radiant women I have ever known. I can't wait for Magnolia to meet her!

In sharp and painful contrast to the joy I feel snuggling my sweet new baby girl, I feel I have heard so many stories of loss. From a best friend here in town miscarrying, friends of friends with early pregnancy complications, to little Zaria, whose family are complete strangers, in the picture above -- there are hurting families out there and my heart breaks.

Little Zaria entered the world at only 21 weeks. Her twin sister Abigail was stillborn. After surviving the NICU for a month, sweet Zaria passed away this past Sunday. Though her life was short, her impression on the world was larger than could ever be measured. You can read more of Zaria & her family's story here.

Running a bit behind in blog world this week, so I thought if tv networks can do it, why can't I?... this post is a "rerun," originally "aired" May 20, 2010.

I take way too much for granted.

I get up each morning. Go to let my puppy out, grab breakfast, check email, make my way to the shower, get ready for work as I watch the morning news, grab the lunch and coffee that my husband put together, kiss hubs goodbye, start my car, and start my workday. I like my coworkers. I like my job. I like what my office stands for. I come home from work and have hang out time with David. We run together, play a game, he cooks for me. We veg on the couch and watch TV. We climb in bed together & wake up next to each other. My family is (mostly) healthy. My bills are paid. I have great friends who support & encourage me.

What exactly could I ever complain about? Nothing! At least that’s what one would think.

I, however, find a million things to complain about --There are too many weeds. I want this, but can’t spend the money. I don’t know how to do this. I’m tired. I’m too hot or too cold. She gets on my nerves. He ripped me off. Too many commercials. Not enough time. That’s not fair. They didn’t say thank you. My head hurts…

Shut up already!!! Am I serious?

I have way too much to be grateful for than to sit around complaining about petty things. So what my shower was cold, my husband loves me. So what I’m stuck in traffic, I live in a great community. So what she gave me a dirty look, I have great friends who don’t judge me. So what if money is tight this month, I have a God who will see me through & always loves me just the same. I am so thankful for these things.

Instead of living with a spirit of attitude, what would it be like if we instead took on a spirit of gratitude?

Wiggles Wiggles Wiggles

It's been a long time... but wiggles are back! And I tell you what -- i've learned a whole new definition of the wiggles since July 19th! This little girl grows more wiggly every day. I seriously cannot believe she is 6 weeks old already & gosh what a difference six weeks makes -- how different we both are! I feel like a completely different person than I did six weeks ago. I have so much more confidence, patience, and peace -- God has truly had his hand on me. I cannot even begin to explain how motherhood has already affected my life. What a blessing! Once I find the words, I'll make sure to share with you.

In between nap time, eating time, play time, and cuddle time, I've had a lot of fun catching up in the blogging world. I've missed a lot -- new shops, new pregnancies, new houses, new jobs -- y'all have been busy busy bees! I've also discovered (of course) lots of lovely new (to me) blogs that I know you will love...

I am a bit behind the times... but, I am officially on the Mad Men band wagon. I don't have cable, but I have discovered netflix on my iPhone... and Mad Men has officially become my "feeding time show of choice." It is so addicting! My twin sister is engaged! Whoo-hoo! Yippy Skippy! Happy dance! On July 22 (same day me & d got engaged), just days after M was born, in my front yard, Dan got down on one knee and she said YES!

Jessica & Dan are planning their wedding for next fall - late October-ish so we have some time to plan, but I'm already having fun chatting with sissy about colors, locations, dresses, etc.!

Things Organized

Organized is not generally a word used to describe me. But I am organized in my own little way that works for me. I do think there is a difference between organized and clean right? I might be messy -- but I usually know where to find things (even if they are under a pile of other things).

Time Flies!

Guess who's little nugget is 1 month old?!? So incredibly crazy how time flies and so so incredibly crazy how much changes in just 1 month's time! This little gal can almost hold her head up completely AND she is already smiling at more than just gas bubbles! She can sleep 7 hours at night (sometimes), is a champion eater, and loves bath time. She weighs over 10lbs., is in size 1 diapers, loves to swing, and has the prettiest dark blue eyes! Love this girl!

Cupcakes don't disappoint! :: Guest post, Living a Life of Love

Hello Wild & Precious readers! I’m Michelle, aka michabella, from Living a Life of Love. I was oh so honored when Blair asked if I would do a guest post while she and her family welcome sweet baby Magnolia! If you are not familiar with my blog, one must know that I love ALL things cupcake! I have a side cupcake business, Michabella’s Cupcakery. I am excited to share with y’all a perfect summer cupcake recipe!

Did you know blackberries are in season for the summer? I found this blackberry buttercream recipe and have had it saved for months. I decided to whip up some white cupcakes so I could put this buttercream to use! The white cupcake recipe is light and fluffy, almost magical. I suggest whipping some of these up! You will NOT be disappointed!

White Cupcakes

adapted from cook's illustrated

Makes 24-30

2 1/4 cups cake flour

1 cup whole milk, room temperature

6 egg whites, room temperature

2 teaspoons almond extract

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 3/4 cups granulated sugar

4 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons) unsalted butter, room temperature

Set oven rack in the middle position. Preheat oven to 350F. Line cupcake trays with baking cups.
Whisk together milk, egg whites, almond and vanilla extracts. Set aside.
In a separate bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add butter and mix until it forms coarse wet crumbs.
Add all but 1/2 cup of the milk mixture and beat at medium speed for 1 1/2 minutes. Add remaining milk mixture and beat 1 minute.
Using an ice cream scooper, fill baking cups ¾ full of the cake batter.
Bake 12-14 minutes, until a toothpick comes out somewhat clean.
Cool cupcakes completely on a wire rack. Frost with blackberry buttercream!

Blackberry Buttercream

adapted from the novice chef

Makes enough to frost 24-30 cupcakes

1 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons) butter, room temperature

6 cups confectioners sugar

6 tablespoons strained blackberry puree

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon almond extract

Beat butter on medium speed until fluffy, about 2 minutes.
Slowly add 1 cup of the conf. sugar and beat until smooth.
Add blackberry puree, vanilla, and almond until blended.
Add remaining sugar half a cup at a time, blending after each addition or until it’s at the consistency you want.
When all sugar is added, beat on medium high until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
Frost cupcakes!

It is a complete honor to be here guest posting for the new mama because it wasn’t all too long ago that I welcomed my little crumb into the world. Bliss from the moment her big blue eyes locked on mine, and my life has reached new heights of glory ever since. I cannot count the numerous ways I have changed since I became me + her. Among the changes and evolution, I’ve noticed my desire to be more feminine and girly has gone into overdrive. A girl who used to have a closet full of jeans and t-shirts, now obsesses over frilly dresses and flowing skirts. Recently, I’ve fallen head-over-heels for the turban. It seems so très chic, and I’m all for sprinkling a bit of glamour into my summer look. How about you? Would you or have you decorated your pretty head with a pleated fabric of choice?
