I agree with what you said, and actually I read that same article that you quoted from and I agreed with everything HE said. I didn't feel like Bethke made it clear enough that he was speaking about false religion, and I feel like it could be confusing to those who don't already understand what he's getting at.

Ok, I really like your follow up and like DeYoung's conclusion.

I'm on point with you with seeing the guy's dislike for false religions but even within Christianity, people can fall into the 'religious' category like all the false religions, since they're focusing more on the rules and rituals and not their relationship.
Because we know a lot of 'Christians' believe they're saved just by going to church every week and reading their bible.

And with that, I can see this guy clumping up even Christians in with the rest of the religions.

I think people are scared to say God hates anyone or anything and always want to say 'God is love'..yes, that's true but God also hates. There are plenty of verses that state his hatred for people. I don't see any about Him hating religion, and this guy, I think is taking liberty with that in his video, but God is just.

I was looking up some things and came across this that I thought was a pretty good explanation of religion vs true religion.

Even though its just a word, I don't think I could ever call myself 'religious'. Something about it, I don't know what, turns me off.

Any way, I still think, with the gray areas in his video, its good overall. It has people thinking and talking about God and hopefully it gets people researching more about Him to the point of salvation.

awesome follow-up. i think this even made me step back and even wish i was slower to write my previous comment - that part about liking it A LOT. i don't dislike it but now i see where it can be more confusing than clear for some people, especially when everyone has their own definition of "religion." i really also appreciate the quotes from kevin deyoung! thanks for sharing this, blair!

I understand what Bethke is getting at...and i also understand the dangers of not thinking about exactly what he is saying...religion is used in the bible-so there is definitely a Jesus filled kind of religion, but yes totally agree that religion can easily become just a method, tradition, and lifeless.

I admire the time and effort you put into your response Blair. I understand where a lot of people are coming from. And I respect that. I just don't believe in organised religion.

I appreciate the video because it's created dialogue and that's always very important. And if things like that video get younger people who are often disengaged about topics like this (especially where I come from) then that's a great thing.

Bethke had some great comments about his poem and I agree that religion is important, but religion and the institution of religion does not provide salvation, only Christ does. His poem should have been called "I love Jesus more than religion"

Deep, thoughtful post. When I watched the video I had similar questions and objections.
James, the brother of Jesus, said "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." (James 1:27)

I think how the author of the spoken word responded was very indicative of how much he loved Jesus. I think he is human so he is flawed but his intent to bring God glory and praise is beautiful. I love the closing words from DeYoung as well.

Thanks for taking the time to write this Blair. I agree so much that Jeff(who later admitted himself) has been through pain with his experience of religion, and wanted to express that that is not the religion we should seek. I am actually one who loves Jesus AND religion, because it religion is the way we express and live out our love for him. And being a follower of JEsus, who founded his bride the church, I support it even when it is broken and pray for its healing. What a beautiful post and well said!

i agree completely with the way you described this... whenever someone says they don't like religion or prefer relationship, or however they say it... I ALWAYS think of their "religion" as a false one. because if it's Christ-centered and you hate it.. well, that's a whole other direction as you well said :)
